The problem with buses in Market Place, Frome is...... ?

Everyone knows that there's congestion in Market Place, the bus bays are badly designed & both vehicles & pedestrians are frustrated by the situation, so what are we going to do about it? Do you recall the photos I took in March showing the problem?

Checking out timetables at Traveline SW it seems there is a pretty obvious timetabling clash;

Going north (old PO) between 9am & 10.35am we have buses at the following times

9.04, 9.07, 9.16, 9.30, 9.34, 9.37, 9.48, 9.49, 10.04, 10.07, 10.13, 10.15, 10.30, 10.30, 10.34, 10.37, 10.49.

That's 15 buses in 1.5 hours.

Going south (ShoeZone) at the same period we have 20 buses;

9.04, 9.05, 9.07, 9.14, 9.15, 9.18, 9.20, 9.28, 9.34, 9.45, 9.57, 9.59, 10.04, 10.15, 10.18, 10.19, 10.20, 10.24, 10.34, 10.34.

So about 35 buses pass through the town centre in a critical 1.5 hour period, no wonder its chaotic!

The graphs show the problems - the first shows the build up of buses on both sides, with a peak of seven between 9.00am and 9.15am & again between 10.15am and 10.30am. The second shows the impact on the east side (going south) in a ten minute period if each bus is on time (is that likely?) and stays for just 3 minutes (is that realistic?). It shows a peak at 10.20am.

Do you know that the Town Council have appointed consultants to look at options for improving Market Place? See the article here for details and another from 2011 here.

So what to do? Could some of the buses going north pull up at the entrance to Market Yard car park instead?. Could some of the buses going south pull into Cork Street & park below the car park?

What is your solution?

By the way, did you know that you can find out by text when your next bus is from Market Place? If you want to go north just text sotdjwmd to 84268. If you want to go south text sotdjwjp. It sends details of the next 3 buses passing through. Neat.

This is a list of the buses traversing the town, with maps showing the routes (click the links);

30 (First Bus)

X34 Faresaver (Trowbridge)

51 Frome Minibuses Warminster/Westbury (Wed)

53 Frome Minibuses Warminster (& Asda)

161 First to Wells (Shepton)

184 First to Bath (Midsomer Norton)

234 First to Trowbridge

267 First to Bath (Beckington)

267 Faresaver to Bath

412 Frome Minibuses circuit

(402 & 414 also run through)

    All of the buses could easily get to cork street,plenty of around there-the old toilet block needs pulling down,this would then free up spaces for passengers to get out and go straight into westway .
    Common sense approach methinks.
    Too simple for the council?

    Great idea about texting for the next buses.

    I can't see any problem with getting the smaller buses (are they all Frome Minibuses?) to go down to the coach park below Cork Street, its not used very much.

    By the way, I've heard that Faresavers aren't any cheaper than First.
