Where do people in Frome do their food shopping?
By LoveFrome | Thursday, December 15, 2011, 15:06
As expected, Asda & Sainsbury's take the greatest percentage of convenience shopping in Frome at 32% each. Frome town centre takes 11% of trade (broken down below) & 8% of food shopping is done in 'other' stores in the Frome area (including Tesco Extra, Culverhill Co-op & McColls). The statistics come from surveys undertaken in 2010 by NEMS Market Research, and summarised in a report by Roger Tym & Partners for the District Council.

Surprisingly, Morrisons in Warminster is next on the list with 5% of trade. 4 areas take 4% of trade each - Frome town centre, Lidl's, M&S [NB these 3 are combined to give 11% figure above] & Tesco Extra in Trowbridge. Others on the list are Sainsbury's in Bradford on Avon at 2%. Asda in Trowbridge was less than 0.5%, as was Tesco, Shepton Mallet.
Annual convenience goods spending (food, alcohol, non-durable household goods & newspapers) per household is £1720, of which 70% is food.
Table 3.1 in the report (pic above) gives pedestrian flows in the town centre on a Friday & Saturday in March. Cheap Street has the highest figure at 124 pedestrians per 5 minutes (though Market Place & Westway were busier on the Friday), followed by the Westway at 97% of this, Kingsway at 90% of the figure, Market Place (Iceland) at 92% & Market Place (The George) is 86%. The top of Stony Street has 62% of the Cheap Street footfall, with 77 people per 5 minute period.

Another way of looking at the statistics for food shopping is to see that 84% of Frome people buy their food in Frome. 5% shop in Warminster, 4% in Trowbridge & 2% in Bradford on Avon. Considering that 15% of Frome people commute to Wilts for work this is unsurprising (2001 census). A total of 29% commute out of Frome for work. I've excluded the figures for Nordington (Staplemead Creamery) & Mells (Whatley Quarry) as these don't count as commuting in my book.

Reportwow, only 3% in Lidl, I'm very surprised at that figure, it's got such good prices.
