After over a month of nominations and voting, our Local Legends competition is finally over. Some truly amazing characters and stories have come to light and we'd like to offer our sincere thanks to all those who took part. It is clear from the hugely enthusiastic response to the competition that community spirit is as alive and kicking in 2011 as it's ever been.
We're delighted to announce that the Local Legend winner in Frome are The Wheel of Four Tunes guys. Congratulations! Look out for their picture on billboards around town soon, as well as a profile of them on this very site in the coming days. Given their outstanding work in Frome, it is only fitting that they will now become the face of fromepeople.
Three finalists were chosen on the basis of a public vote, after which a panel of senior media figures met to decide the winner. The judges included the Managing Director of Northcliffe Digital, Roland Bryan, and Lisa Buckingham, the Editor of the Financial Mail on Sunday, who was recently awarded an OBE for services to journalism and women's issues.
That so many talented and inspiring individuals were put forward made settling upon an overall Local Legend a very tough task. When making their decision, the judges took into account the number of votes each finalist had received along with their initial number of nominations and the nature of their work in the community.
In The Wheel of Four Tunes guys, the judges found people who demonstrated a real passion for their work and commitment to their town. It was for this reason they felt they really deserved the title 'Local Legend'.
You can watch the judges in action in the video accompanying this article, and get a taste of the lively debates that helped to decide Frome's Local Legend!
I am part of the Wheel of Four Tunes. I have just read this after being pointed toward it - I just wanted to add my comment as I feel there was some tension over this, and I do not wish the Wheel any bad press.
Firstly - Thank you to all who voted - indeed we were very surprised to actually win, the billboards are up and it is very exciting!
This will really be a moment in our lives to tell the Grandchildren, and hope that it can be a really useful moment to help us get gigs and work in the future. I mean this truthfully without sarcasm, this is truly one of the best things which has happened to me!
As for all the comments on here (which is why I have been pointed here) I can understand that if you hadn't heard of us or know what we do, it seems odd. Of course we asked our friends to vote, of course we wanted to win, what more can I say?! We're over the moon!
When we went to the photoshoot, we got to meet a lot of wonderful people who had done great things for their communites, and great things for people overseas. We also got to meet other winners, who simply ran shops in the area.
So indeed - we have not done great things for Africa, but both of us have indeed worked in Frome and surrounding areas for many years and made alot of friends. One of us is currently working incredibly hard in the Frome Merlin Theatre, desperately trying to keep the place afloat after having it's funding removed. I myself have been putting on events in Frome, dj'ing for peoples weddings and birthdays for nearly fifteen years. I am currently involved in a youth project with 20+ local teenagers.
So perhaps alot of our votes do not come for the Wheel itself (which is a musical performance btw) - but for what other things we have achieved.
Summing it up - winning this was an amazing experience for us! I invite Caryne and all of her friends to come and see us play, get to know us and then vote for us next year! Mwahahahahahahahahahha!!!! We shall take over the world!!
Its such a shame that such a positive web page has be tarnished with such negativity and conspiracy.
Caryne you really do have some out there theories and looking through your other posts on this site that you obviously like to wind people up. I for one will not rise to this provocation.
Of course you are allowed to have an opinion on such a matter but at the end of the day what is done is done it was a competition and the votes speak for themselves.
I am sorry if you do not agree with the winner but like I have said before now you know the competition exists maybe next year the person you deem fit to win will win.
Yes I am new to this site but now I am a member I will be using it a lot more. I think it is very important (in this economic climate) to promote the positive aspects of Frome rather than argue over trivial little negatives.
Lets not spoil it , this town is full of far to many "Frumours" as it is.
I wasn't going to reply but you have made a point that needs replying to, the page existed last night, it was for the LML Owners Club of Great Britain, and was asking for votes, people from all around the country were voting for the 'guys' and it was clearly an orchestrated 'vote for me' campaign, in the same way as they are asking people to vote for them on their Facebook page They made quite a nasty insult to the local mayor at one time and constantly gave voting figures to encourage people to vote again. I have no vendetta against these people and I am merely reporting the facts.. They clearly deleted it when they were found out. Nothing else to add except to point out how interesting I find it that the two people here who have taken to insulting me and supporting the 'Four Tunes' have never posted on anything else before on this forum, I leave it to others to make up their minds on this.
