I would have agreed with the post about live music a year ago but what with the closure of live music nights at the Piano Bar, the Griffin having very few events after the noise complaints (why go and live next to a pub then complain about noise) and The Wheatsheaves gigs being few and far between (and often the same awful, cliched, bands) I'm not sure I agree anymoe. The Cheese and Grain can put on a decent shoiw, witness The Psychadelic Furs the other week but they are often bogged down with tribute bands and prog that was tired thirty years ago let alone now plus, of course, the future of the place seems in doubt anyway. I moved to Frome from Bristol nearly two years ago and love the place but it has gone a bit downhill with music recently.
Hey! Good news, music at The Griffin is back - check out the What's-On section, Jazz on Thursday, Deltics on Saturday & more to come. From now on, 2nd Thursday is jazz, 2nd Tuesday Acoustic Club, last Tuesday Celtic Session, plus open mic. Monthly Acoustic Plus at the Cheese & Grain, Beyond Obstacles gig there on 3rd Dec....... think we're back on track!
That's good news, I wonder how you get a gig at The Griffin, when my friends tried a few months back they never got any reply from the email on the website. Acoustic Plus at the Cheese and Grain I find a bit too insular, seems a bit of a clique to me for both musicians and audience. I find this a lot in Frome, sadly, you seem to get a gig by who you know not how good you are.
I think it was the new landlord, it was a women but can't remember her name, that my friends wrote to a few months back but neither got any reply. They are both long established musical acts from Bristol so you would think they would have been interested but no reply, they can't really 'pop in' as they are from Bristol. It's easier to email as, like I said, you can send music links, but no good if people don't reply. I've not been to The Olive Tree yet so can't comment on there but heard it's good which is why my friends would like to play there. Sorry I do get a bit jaundiced as my mates get ignored by certain gig promotors in Frome then I see the acts they do choose to put on and some are dire and virtually unlistenable (I'm too tactful to mentiion names) which I why I get annoyed at the obvious cliques that seem to be around with people giving gigs to friends and friends of friends regardless of their talent.
