School children at a Somerset school were being kept inside this afternoon after a fire broke out in a nearby building.

Pupils at Writhlington School, in Radstock, were told it was not safe to leave the grounds after the fire started in the former school building around 2.30pm.

Parents of the children have been sent text messages reassuring them of their children's safety and they are expected to be allowed to leave within the hour.

Around seven fire engines were at the scene in Knobsbury Lane, which was cordoned off as a result of the blaze in the empty premises.

Police officers were also at the scene and were controlling traffic along Frome Road.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

i was at the school when it happened and the smoke was flooding out of the main hall's windows and out of any doorways, we were told to stay in our classes and that our buses and parents had been informed of the fire and so are preparing to pick us up at a later time.we were later told by our headteacher that the fire was being fought and would soon be stable but we must keep all windows and doors sealed shut. Thankfully I was in our Air conditioned Photography suite and so was not sweltering as many of the other students were! Once the fire was stable we were asked to collect in village groups at the main entrance where we were then escorted to our coaches that were further along knobsbury lane. we then had to sit in the sweltering bus for 15 minutes without a single breeze. now I know how the orchids feel in the greenhouses! The staff dealt with the disaster extremely well and with added credit to the police and fire departments for their quick reactions and help in calming down some of the panicked students.
