As part of the planning process the District Council undertakes data monitoring and health checks for each of our Mendip towns. The latest healthchecks from December 2010 can be downloaded from their website HERE.

There are 3 documents and below are links for each document plus a few extracts pertinent to Frome. The 3 images are also from the reports & show pedestrian flows & supermarket statistics.

Volume 1 - Final report - DOWNLOAD

extract; Due to the numerous foodstore commitments, there is limited capacity to support any additional floorspace over the study period. There is unlikely to be any expenditure capacity to support new floorspace before 2021. There is a total requirement of 1,769 sq m net, although this requirement falls between 2021 and 2031. (whole Mendip area)

Volume 3 - town health checks  - DOWNLOAD

NB from Vol 3 - in Frome 18% of people visited the town centre 2-3 days per week for food shopping, 16% of people visited the town centre once per week & 33% visited once or twice per month. 17% never did. See figure 4.3 (pic, above)

MDC say "The Mendip Local Development Framework is being developed from a range of evidence drawing in a range of information sources. Within the published documents, web links to relevant studies and sources are provided to enable readers to understand the justification for certain statements and policy approaches.

There are some areas where the council has had to undertake or commission its own work. The sections below offer links to these studies (or other arrangements by which you can obtain the information) and in each case a simple description is provided. "

    I find the report encouraging

    1. for 2-3 visits per week - best of all
    2. for those shopping between everyday and once a week - best of all
    3. and the lowest number of people who never shop in town

All the other towns have high numbers of people who never visit the town centre to shop. Frome must be doing something right. So let's keep it that way. It does not mean we cannot change but we must be careful.

As far as town centre shopping is sign of a healthy town then Frome is OK. I suspect it would do well in other measures e.g. societies clubs, voluntary activities , sport etc etc etc
