In April 2011 opening hours were reduced and new charges brought in at household waste recycling centres in Somerset, due to cuts in the Waste Services budget by Somerset County Council. Since then, recycling has fallen and flytipping has increased across Somerset significantly, as was predicted. Waste going to landfill, and landfill tax charges, have also increased.   This must be bad for the environment, so I am asking for a rethink.

The petition asks Somerset County Council to review its waste budgets and for Somerset Waste Partnership to consider opening the recycling centres longer and reducing charges. I think this would help increase recycling once again, reduce the illegal dumping of waste, and help reduce landfill tax.

Fly-tipping has increased (seen it with my own eyes) and yet those in positions of authority in Somerset try and deny it's a problem. I have signed this because it makes sense and those who can make a difference need to realise this.
