Frome's unique Valentine Lamp lighting ceremony

On 14th February Frome celebrates Valentine Day in its own unique way with the annual Valentine Lamp lighting ceremony. At 5.30pm a rocket will remind people of the ceremony which starts at 6pm. Reg Ling will be the master of ceremonies and explains how the lamp works before lighting the gas with his specially made lighting pole.

The Valentine Lamp plaque, St Catherines, Frome
The lamp is situated in Catherine Street, just above the top of Catherine Hill, and there will be mulled wine for adults & fruit for children, who are encourages to bring lamps to the event.
A plaque describes the history & dedication of the site;
"The Valentine Lamp
Linking the romance of gaslight with a George V posting box, artwork and setting depict the Valentine theme. Reg Ling salvaged, restored and adapted the old column originally on Catherine Hill, where a plaque is set. The site received dedication and blessing by The Mayor and Frome Council of Churches Chairman on 14th February 1993 lamplighting ceremony on Valentine Day.

Let the lighting of this lamp today, the 14th Feb. 1993 dedicate this site forever to St. Valentine, patron and protector of all who find love, regardless of race, creed or gender."

Update - the ceremony was a delight! It was attended by a good number of people & some very fine lanterns. Reg was magnificent, as ever & the mulled wine was welcome.
