Small towns can win against the overpowerful Supermarkets and corporations
In mid-December, Tesco announced that it would not appeal against the rejection of its most recent planning application for a store in the Suffolk town, despite the fact that planning officers had recommended councilors should grant planning permission.
A Tesco spokesperson stated: "We respect the democratic planning process and have decided not to appeal against the committee's decision." The company is now considering alternative options for the property. It thus looks like local residents have finally won their 26-year battle against Tesco with campaigners arguing that the proposal would have caused substantial harm to the High Street and the wider economy resulting in seriously negative effect on the sustainability and vitality of Hadleigh town centre.
