Bellowhead - Possibly the Best Live Band Around
There are lots of words you could use to describe bellowhead, wild, joyous, perverse, bold, crazy, full-blooded, intricate, fearless, funny, epic but mostly they are BIG. Big sounds, big numbers, big stage presences and live, big performances. Formed in 2004 by renowned duo John Spiers (melodeon, concertina) and Jon Boden (vocals, fiddle), Bellowhead are a 11 piece big band that draws it's musicians from a variety of musical backgrounds from folk, jazz, classical, disco to world music. Their line up includes talented players from different musical streams that blend the sound to stunning effect, playing more than 20 instruments between them with six vocalists. Although Bellowhead play traditional folk songs many of them hundreds of years old with rich folk histories themselves, the songs are given a more modern big folk band interpretation in their arrangements.
Bellowhead will no doubt serve up a big delicious heady brew again for the Frome massive (he-he!) on Friday. If you have any choice in the matter you shouldn't miss it. Though I think the gig maybe sold out this time which is a testament to Bellowhead appeal.
My personal favourite from the latest Hedonism album is the opening track New York Girls and I can't wait to hear it live again. It is and they are stunning live!
See you Friday.
